A bone mineral densitometry is a low-dose, non-invasive x-ray used to measure bone mineral content and mass. It is most often used to detect possible bone loss and to diagnose osteoporosis. Oftentimes a bone mineral density test will be the preferred method of testing because it uses two low level x-ray beams to scan the strength of your bones.
A BMD test is able to monitor how effective a particular treatment is for osteoporosis and determine an individual’s risk for developing bone fractures. Osteoporosis is a bone condition that causes the bones to become brittle and thin, therefore decreasing bone strength and leading to a higher risk of future bone fractures. The results of a BMD scan are mapped out and then compared to the general population at peak bone bass (young/normal), as well as a different population that is similar to your age and gender.
