Your NE Calgary Choice for Soft Tissue Ultrasound

Soft Tissue Ultrasound | Saddletown Radiology | NE Calgary | Radiology Clinic

Saddletown Radiology is committed to your overall health and well-being. That is why we are pleased to provide soft tissue ultrasound, for the assessment of any soft tissue abnormality. Using a handheld device called a transducer, a soft tissue ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images and assess palpable superficial lumps, bumps, or masses in soft tissue anywhere on the body. These masses are just beneath the skin on your body, and they may contain fluid, fat, or solid tissue. A soft tissue ultrasound helps determine if the area needs another test to diagnose the type of tissue in the lump.

Soft tissue masses are cell growths that can appear nearly anywhere on the body. A soft tissue mass ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to assess these growths (commonly referred to as lumps, bumps, or masses) in any soft tissue in the body. The exam can provide information on the details of the mass, including size, location and calcification, soft tissue swelling, mobility of the mass, and invasion of surrounding structure. Many masses that are benign have certain common characteristics (locations and imaging findings) which suggest their diagnosis. Likewise, many masses that are malignant have imaging features indicating suspicious findings.

Palpable Masses/Lumps

Palpable means something that can be felt or touched. If a mass is felt during an examination, an ultrasound or a mammogram is often the next step in evaluating the palpable mass before a biopsy is done. The good news is that most palpable masses are found to be benign (not cancer), although effective and timely diagnosis are necessary in order to rule out malignancy. Ultrasound imaging would generally be the first step in evaluation, although tissue sampling would be needed for a definitive diagnosis.

Ganglion cysts are small lumps that grow out of tissues surrounding a joint or tendon. They most commonly develop on the back of the wrist or the hand, but they can also appear on the foot or the ankle. They are typically oval or round, can range in size, and are filled with a jelly-like fluid. Ganglion cysts are generally harmless but could cause discomfort and limitation of joint function. An ultrasound is often administered to confirm a ganglion cyst if it cannot be seen or felt, and/or to rule out other conditions, such as arthritis or a tumor. At Saddletown Radiology we aspirate the ganglion cyst and we can administer local pain medication.
